Nice, May 2017. Every year, the global association of telecom and technology companies TMForum announces its “Excellence Award“ winners at its yearly world conference TMForumLive!. A judging panel, consisting of independent and very senior judges, selects the final winners out of many highly qualified submissions from all over the world. The most important criteria for the selection of the winners are innovation, contribution to society, open digital ecosystem and business success.
Disruptive Innovation: Digital on-boarding of new customers
With the disruptive introduction of a completely digital on-boarding process for new customers in India, Reliance Jio met all these criteria without any doubt and was able to win this award by a big margin as “Digital Service Innovator“ of the year. The judging panel was particularly impressed by the tremendous growth of new customers directly after launch: Reliance Jio acquired 100 mn new customers within 170 days, a world record – beating even the growth pace of internet companies like Facebook, Google or Whatsapp. Due to the attractive offer, Jio is enabling many people in India with access to broadband internet, who were formerly excluded due to the high cost in the market. With this, Jio is significantly contributing to the development of the large and fairly young Indian population.
